Parents don't know how to parent because their parents (possibly their parents' parents) didn't know how to parent. They make their kids do dumb shit because they figure their little bodies can handle it and then when the kid starts showing signs that something is seriously wrong, the parent tends to have complacency bias because "it's probably nothing" is less stressful than "my kid could be fucking dying."
Plus if this dad was anything like my dad I imagine the kid is scared shitless of the beating of his life/death if he doesn't do as he's told, so parent being dumb and kid trying not to get his ass beat for not meeting dad's ridiculously tall expectations = heart attack or similar probably.
