losing weight without exercise can be unhealthy in itself, especially if you lose it quickly through starvation dieting or surgery. exercise trains the body steadily over time to re-adjust to your new weight and body composition and helps adjust to changes in diet. skipping the exercise step also leads to re-gaining the weight quickly if you happen to screw up your diet schedule for any reason. boosting metabolism through exercise allows you to eat whatever the fuck you want (within reason) without gaining weight.

running isn't the only way of course, it is just the easiest, cheapest, and most effective way, especially early on.
