>>1607855i dont have a problem with FM
on gennybut most SMS games tracks are just reading the same notes into FM, which means it basically turns into a bunch of sine waves with little modulation. kinda misses the point of FM imo.
i dont actually know the types of algorithms SMS was even capable of because, for the most part, no one used them. unless they specifically wrote more code for the FM channels
most didnt/couldnt nor were even allowed the memory to do so, it was configured to simply read the same exact data but output to FM instead. entire channels of tracks for PSG can be programmed in a handful of bytes. FM needs a LOT more nuance to actually show off its versatility/advantages otherwise itll sound like a blank patch for a cheap yamaha keyboard
cuz it literally ISalso the PSG channels the SMS had were these excellent fat square sounds. ripped str8 outta colecovision and some other classic microcomputers iirc. and square for bass too, unlike NESs weird triangle that you couldnt control the velocity of
and also sounded 8vb. incredibly difficult to work around. makes the bass way more defined
No.1607998
>>1607990yeah i always liked the genesis sound chip more than the SNES, the former has that nice hard rock TWANG to it, while the latter sounds like its being played through a pillow
also get an early model genny and nothing later
No.1608005
>>1607998its because genesis had a literal 80s industry standard digital keyboard built into it
well maybe on the cheaper end of industry standard. but still it was an
actual musical instrument. tons of musicians gigged w the DX series, they were reliable, versatile and cheap
SNES had a few PSG tracks, then like a dozen sample tracks. more layers possible, and you dont need to deal with any subtractive synthesis insanity to get a sound. you just sample it. problem is you need to compress tf out of it to fit on the cart with everything else
hence the pillow

FM is hard stuff
its the kinda stuff that would make programming or physics nerds weep and beg for mercy. nvm some stoner musician
its much easier to make a full song on a chinsy little sampler than it is to even make a single good-sounding waveform with FM
but obviously w that complexity you get exponentially more possibilities, not just in actual waves, but even their modulation
heres a pic of the 2612s
genny available algorithms
at a glance, not only does this mean almost nothing to anyone, even to those who understand how FM works, but each configuration basically acts like a completely different synth. so you need to learn all of them and what theyre even good for first or youre just wasting your fucking time
No.1608012

doesnt exactly scream "drum sound", does it?
and it still wouldnt if you just had it stock and were playing w it. itd sound like a shitty keyboard
but thas how it be.
>op1 set to output noise run through op2, a not-so-LFO that applies a very quick decay>op3 pitched lower at lower velocity, but similarly through op4 at a slightly less quick delay>smash em togetheret voila: """""realistic"""" FM snare sound
lik duhhhhh
and thats how you have to do literally everything
you can see why programs like GEMS were created, to give musicians a way to work backwards from a "finished" waveform
No.1608013
>>1608012works gud for bass too iirc
slower LFO, and outputting waves instead of noise obv

>>1607990FM shouldnt play on games that dont have FM sound on the cartridge tbh idk why youd be getting fm sounds on games without fm. did you install a FM chip on your sms? ive been meaning to but forget a lot so never get around to it.
No.1608033
>>1608023>>1608023>FM shouldnt play on games that dont have FM sound on the cartridgehas nothing to do with the cartridge
think of it like a piano roll
thats actually p much what trackers are. the piano roll just shows the notes, timing, and dynamics the player piano is supposed to play. by itself it does nothing.
if you put it in a SMS, itll come out of the PSGs the system has
if you have a nip master system (mark3) the same carts that play PSG on your SMS will now play in FM if you had that FM add-on thang
the only diff is what hardware the data is being output to. the notes and even modulations will be identical. since most OSTs were composed w PSG in mind, it can be kind of a mixed bag when just copypasting that into FM channels
i think there ARE games that had specifically arranged for FM OSTs, but i doubt we got any of them. for whatever reason sega never released that particular meme add-on outside japan
nah give em the 32x and tell em to suck it
No.1608051
>>1608033>there ARE games that had specifically arranged for FM OSTs, but i doubt we got any of themyes. no.
thing is, >we got em but never got the FM sound thang addon that the mkiii got, but you can get a fm sound unit anyway and get that working. the games that had specific fm sound in nipland kept the same code when shipped west but the west only didnt have anything to play that part of the carts.
vids related are an example for a game that had fm sound but dont @ me if theyre exactly the same i dont have time to really pay attention to it rn
No.1608067
>>1608051yea holy fuck the PSG ver is so much better
the bass on the FM one sounds like a joke. sine waves for bass is always a bad idea. at best it gets lost/buried, at worst it sounds like fucking bubbles
but yea thats what im saying. all its doing is taking the code that was meant for PSG channels and playing it out of FM, completely unaltered. you can theoretically do the same thing with any western SMS cart, on any SMS, provided youve modded in the actual chips it needs to output FM.
music was always first on the chopping block in terms of cart space. they def didnt have room to put the entire OST on there TWICE
so they just didnt

>Out of these, only Wonder Boy III is known to have been released in South Korea. However, the FM audio in Wonder Boy III will only function with a Japanese system equipped with FM audio capabilities; Western consoles modified with FM audio use PSG due to the game's region detection code. However, the Wii Virtual Console version allows using the FM audio.years ago i was rally into this and looked a lot up, didnt understand most of it and what i did i done mostly forgot lel

i just wish i was gud enough to play alien soldier lol
that games bosses seems like youre fighting
through a demo
>giant multicolored checker-textured bouncing ball that turns into cubes and/or pyramids>ring of small spheres that spin around the screen in different shapes in fake 3D>absurdly detailed robots>fake mode 7: the boss>512 simultaneous on-screen colors: the boss>epilepsy: the bossetc
but yea in terms of music thats an excellent example of what FM synthesis is all about. an absolutely absurd amount of incredibly granular control over waveforms and their modulations. remember this is the same "instrument" that gave us """masterpieces""" like the """"""OST"""""" of fuckin greendog for the sega genesis.
if you like stuff like that id recommend the old 80s/90s detroit techno scene. its what inspired p much ALL of that shit. and funnily enough its mostly done on almost the same exact hardware
well DX series keyboards, but srsly its almost the exact chip No.1608222
>>1608156ya know whats another one thats gud?
SoR3s OST
motohiros songs on that game
oddly enough a lotta yuzos songs suck in 3 are waaaaay tf out there and are just rly impressive synthesis in general. probably the hardest the YM2612 has ever had to work in its life. motherfucker was actually making legitimately experimental music, contemporaneous with that detroit techno scene, and decided "yahhh imma put that in a vidya gaem"
unsurprisingly, most hate that games OST, but thats kinda what happens when youre on the bleeding edge like that
